Just a few days remain until the June 13 primary, and candidates are making their final pitches for votes. On the Democratic side in the governor's race, Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam entered the stretch with a good bankroll.
The race was largely seen as a proxy war between the Sanders and establishment wings of the Democratic Party.
McAuliffe, who, like U.S. Sens. Bernie Sanders, who has backed and campaigned for Perriello, and outgoing Gov. Terry McAuliffe that could affect the party's 2020 presidential nomination. The Democratic party needs to flip 17 districts in order to control the chamber. Which way will it go?
Northam, a low-key pediatric neurologist, won running as a pragmatist with state's Democratic establishment's firm support. Bryce Reeves (Spotsylvania) and Jill Vogel (Fauquier) and Del. Perriello, 42, served a single House term before losing his Charlottesville-area seat in the Republican sweep of 2010. As evidence that the race is heating up, late last week it was reported that Mr. Perriello had loaned his campaign some $150,000 and that a PAC favoring Mr. Northam had launched attacks against Mr. Perriello. JOSHUA BUTLER: So anyone that both Senator Warren and Bernie support I am all for. The difficulty in doing accurate polls in an off-year primary (when turnouts are typically low) is magnified by the roiling political moment.
This morning, I woke up, showered, walked my dog, then drove to the local high school to vote in Virginia's primary election.
Editor's Note: This is a developing story, we are working to get more information and will bring you updates here on NBC29.com. Turning to the Republicans. Among the three, Gillespie is considered the frontrunner. All six being challenged this year have big fundraising leads over their opponents. Because of that, it's time for Virginians to choose a new governor. He ran for U.S. Senate in 2014, narrowly losing to incumbent Senator Mark Warner.
Gillespie basically ignored his competition, flame-throwing chair of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors Corey Stewart, and the strategy seemed to work. Now, whether or not Stewart supporters will turn out for Gillespie in November is a critical question. It's a speech from the President, in which he said In America, we don't worship government.
Campaigning for statewide office, most Democratic candidates have typically ignored the deep red Appalachian corner of the state where Trump won numerous counties by 70% margins. The same poll had Gillespie with a 20-point lead over Stewart and a 23-point lead over Wagner. He energized many new-to-politics voters who oppose Trump but was ultimately unable to expand the universe of Democratic primary voters enough to counter Northam's advantages.
"In off-year elections the Democrats have been winning, but not by as much", he said.
The president certainly won't be a plus for whomever the GOP nominates this fall. (Northam now calls it a "right.") Perriello received an "A"-rating from the NRA as a congressman and voted for the anti-abortion "Stupak amendment" to the Affordable Care Act".
His framed portrait was unveiled on the fifth floor of the Wilson Building. "I devoted my life for three years to trying to defeat George Bush's agenda while Ralph Northam was voting for him twice". You would think he was in his mid-60s.
