Members of the U.S. Congress took the field for their traditional Republicans vs. Democrats baseball game on Thursday, with many wearing hats to honor Representative Steve Scalise, who was critically wounded by a gunman as his Republican team practiced a day before.
"[We've] controlled the internal bleeding, and [his] vital signs have stabilized", Sava said. "He will require additional operations to manage abdominal injuries and other bone injuries".
Scalise was fielding ground balls at second base Wednesday when he was shot at a practice for the annual Republicans-Democrats baseball game.
Several lawmakers and analysts have suggested the shooting could be politically-motivated given the shooter's leftist rants on social media, and called on all lawmakers support each other after the indident.
Investigators say he shot House Rep. Steve Scalise before he was killed by police who had been guarding the congressman.
"That's the source of unity, and more than ever we must embrace it, so on this special night, I leave you with three great American words that for generations have torn down barriers, built bridges of unity, and defied those who have sought to pull us apart".
Scalise will need more surgeries, some of which could take place as early as this weekend. Everyone - Republican, Democrat - was on their feet, paying their respects to the man who is still fighting for his life in MedStar Washington Medical Center. The doctor said Scalise was in shock and near death because of extensive blood loss when he arrived at the hospital by helicopter Wednesday.
Investigators studying Wednesday's attack at a suburban Virginia park said Thursday that shooter James Hodgkinson had obtained his rifle and handgun from licensed firearms dealers.
Since then, the lawmaker has undergone multiple surgeries and procedures to stop the bleeding and fix bone. Scalise is still listed in critical condition.
Scalise has remained under sedation, although doctors have lightened the medication at times so that the congressman can communicate with relatives. They chose to have the coveted Roll Call Trophy that goes to the victor sent to Scalise's office.
"If you're not sure which one I'll be, I'll be the one coaching third on crutches", Congressman Williams said.
Trump says Scalise "continues his very courageous fight", but adds: "it's been much more hard than people even thought at the time".
The wounded Capitol Police officers were identified as David Bailey, who was treated for a minor injury, and Crystal Griner, who was shot in the ankle.
"So we all owe Steve a big, big thank you", Trump added.
Scalise's wife, Jennifer, issued a statement saying she was thankful for the "incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes" the family has received since the shooting.
