Prior to the release of the report, economists polled by Reuters forecast a tally of 183,000 additional jobs to public and private, non-farm payrolls. Average wages rose 0.3 percent in July -- the biggest increase in five months.
Significant job gains in July occurred in food services (53,000 jobs), professional and business services (49,000 jobs), and health care (39,000 jobs).
July's figure means the Canadian economy had added more than 387,000 jobs in the past 12 months.
