Country icon Glen Campbell-famous for such songs at "Rhinestone Cowboy and "Wichita Lineman"-has died after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease".
His final album, Adios, was recorded around the same time as his 2012 Goodbye Tour and released in June this year. The tune chronicles his struggles with the disease and has him saying farewell to his fans and loved ones.
He was born in Billstown, Arkansas in 1936 and moved to Los Angeles in 1962 where he joined the Wrecking Crew group of sessions musicians.
Country music legend Glen Campbell has passed away at 81 years old.
He was taught to play by his Uncle Boo.
In California, Campbell focused on his career as a guitarist before becoming a fixture on the USA music charts, radio and television in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1965, he toured with the Beach Boys after Brian Wilson suffered a nervous breakdown.
Campbell was named CMA Entertainer of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year in 1968, and he hosted the 1972 CMA Awards telecast. He appeared in several films, including the original Western True Grit (handpicked by John Wayne himself for the part, to boot).
Campbell didn't write most of his hits, and most of the hits he wrote he didn't perform.
Married four times, Campbell was famously linked to country singer Tanya Tucker, whom he dated from 1980 to 1981 and had a tumultuous relationship with. He battled cocaine addiction and alcoholism, and saw his second and third marriages fail.
"He is content and cheerful.", Kim, his wife of 35 years, told USA news show Access Hollywood Live.
Musicians from Isaac Hayes to R.E.M. paid tribute to Campbell and Webb by covering their songs, proving their appeal across genres and generations.
You're the last person I will love.
But Campbell's legacy will be his many songs with everyman ease, instantly recognizable tunes that sound so simple - until you try to play and sing them.
Arizona Senator John McCain also lamented Campbell's passing.
