Sabathia's next scheduled start was slated for Sunday opposite LHP Chris Sale but LHP Jordan Montgomery will get the nod after getting recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Friday.
The win helped the Red Sox push their lead in the American League East back to 4 1/2 games over the Yankees.
Severino cruised through the first two innings before issuing the pair of walks in the third that ignited the Red Sox. Not only did Hicks hit a two-run homer that brought the Yankees to within one run in a five-run eighth inning, but he made a one-hop throw from left field to third base to double up Eduardo Nunez on a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning.
A day that started ominously ended on the same note with questions about the rotation and the continued struggles of Aaron Judge.
From Rotoworld: Pomeranz allowed just one run and struck out eight batters over 6 1/3 innings to earn a 4-1 win over the White Sox on Saturday.
"The first word the manager told me was, 'I don't care how many errors you make - play hard, do your thing, show me what you can do, '" Nunez said. "But now that I'm back, it feels good to be around the guys and see their smiling faces again".
Yankees: RHP Masahiro Tanaka was put on the 10-day disabled list because of shoulder inflammation. "It doesn't fall off".
Red Sox pitcher David Price, who hasn't pitched since July 22 because of left elbow inflammation, threw in the outfield from 120 feet, then threw more intensely from 60 feet on flat ground, including breaking balls.
Pomeranz (12-4) won his career-best fifth straight decision, giving up three runs in 6 2/3 innings.
Severino got Ramirez to fly out before his day was done having allowed 10 runs in 4 1/3 innings. Severino will not be facing Sale or Porcello this time.
The Red Sox had scored a total of 20 runs in those previous 10 games, the same number they'd scored in four games against Oakland and only two less than they'd scored in two games against Cleveland.
Ryan Pressly (2-2) picked up the win after starter Kyle Gibson was unable to get the final out of the fifth inning.
Meanwhile, Severino breezed through the first seven Red Sox hitters in 19 pitches.
Montgomery, a rookie, has a 4.05 ERA and 1.236 WHIP in 21 appearances with the Yankees in 2017. The Yankees are 7-3 in their last 10 games following a loss, 4-10 in their last 14 during game 3 of a series and 2-5 in Montgomerys last 7 starts.
Unfortunately for Boston though, something else happened on that play.
While Reed at least at one small bump in the road leading up to his disastrous night, Nunez really only had experienced sunshine and rainbows since coming to the Red Sox. But like I said, it was a big mistake, big part of the game. "The way we bounced back, the way we've come through some challenges as a group, we have responded well to them". Now, the 37-year-old left-hander hopes to miss only one turn for the New York Yankees. "But we're looking forward to Drew Pomeranz setting the tone tomorrow at the beginning".
