Costa appears to have sealed his inevitable exit from Chelsea after they agreed to sell the 28-year-old Spain global back to Atletico Madrid earlier this week.

Diego Costa's departure will have no lasting impact on Chelsea's title ambitions because in Alvaro Morata they have signed the flawless striker to fill his boots, the club's former frontman Andriy Shevchenko said on Friday.

"The agreement is pending the formalisation of the contract between our club and the Spanish global forward".

Diego Costa has been warned he faces a fight to re-establish himself as Atletico Madrid's No.1 striker after finalising his return to his former club.

The reported transfer fee smashes Atletico's record of 40 million euros paid for Radamel Falcao in 2011.

Both players joined Chelsea in the summer of 2014 from the then-Spanish champions, although Luis returned to Los Rojiblancos the following summer.

Morata's skills come on the back of his first treble in a Blues shirt as Chelsea secured their fifth-straight win in the Premier League. Atletico went on to lose in extra time.

"It was a tremendous effort by this club to bring back one of the top three strikers in the world and he will immediately improve us".

But the relationship between Costa and manager Antonio Conte appeared to deteriorate this year, and Costa ended up in exile in Brazil rather than training with the team.

I wanted to return (to Atletico). It is not easy to win away at Stoke, like last season we struggled and won at the end. If he is to prove capable of replacing Costa, Morata must show he can perform against the best sides in the league.

It makes Saturday's task look even more daunting for Stoke as they look to bounce back from two successive defeats, a 2-1 loss at Newcastle last weekend and Tuesday's 2-0 Carabao Cup defeat at Bristol City, which Hughes labelled "our worst performance of the season".

Griezmann's emphatic finish in the 69th minute made the points safe and allowed head coach Diego Simeone to hand his stars some rest ahead of next week's UEFA Champions League meeting with Chelsea, as imminent new signing Diego Costa watched on approvingly from the stands.
