Dade City Christmas Parade

With the remains of Thanksgiving turkeys placed well in the back of refrigerators and Black Friday specials drawing to a close, Christmas is certainly in the air. Winter songs are playing on the radio, houses are decorated with lights, and even Saint Leo University has set up a manger and Christmas tree in the center of campus.

Global Warming Begins to Affect Southern Florida

The effects of global warming have already reached Southern Florida causing coastal cities to flood more often and cause overheated coral to turn white and die. With warmer temperatures, comes stronger hurricanes, and Florida will be one of the states hit hardest by the affect of global warming.  Higher temperatures have already caused the sea levels to rise, and the tide station in Miami Beach has registered an increase of seven inches since 1935.

Saint Leo Honors Strong Ties with Military

Saint Leo University plays a major in helping soldiers by offering distance learning and online classes to military personnel around the United States. The university honored these soldiers, as well as veterans, active service members, and military families, in a Veterans Day ceremony on Friday, November 11, in the Greenfelder-Denlinger boardrooms.

USAF Thunderbirds Take the Show at Airfest 2011

This year’s Airfest took place at MacDill Air force Base on the weekend of November 5, 2011,featuring the USAF Thunderbirds. With 500,000 people in attendance, the Thunderbirds demonstrated the high degree of skill required to take modern war-fighting crafts into battle. Mock battles were performed overhead, and while the aircraft flew near Mach speeds towards each other, spectators watched as the planes maneuvered sideways and upside down in order to avoid collision.

Paterno Fired After 62 Years as Coach of Penn State Amid Sexual Abuse Scandal

The legendary Joe Paterno was fired as the coach of Penn State in the middle of his 62 years with the program and 44 as head coach.  Paterno was relieved of his duties by the Penn State Board of Trustees on Nov. 9 a day after he had announced his retirement for the end of the season.

First Thursdays Event in Downtown Dade City

As a part of an initiative to bring Saint Leo to Dade City and the community of Dade City to Saint Leo First Thursdays was created to show students what Dade City has to offer. There has been discussion over making street signs with the name Lion Country of Field of Pride to integrate Saint Leo into Dade City. Saint Leo students are being encouraged to explore Dade City more and the community is being encouraged to come to public speaker series on campus and athletic events.

Donald R. Tapia School of Business Dedication and Acknowledgment Ceremony

It was 6:00 p.m. Saturday, October 15, 2011, and people were gathered outside the Donald R. Tapia School of Business. Men were dressed in suits and women were wearing evening dresses and gowns, while hors d’oeuvres and drinks were being served by SLU students and staff. Everyone convened near the podium set up next to the time capsule, and awaited the Donald R. Tapia School of Business Dedication and Acknowledgment Ceremony while a string quartet could be heard playing in the background.

Although Dade City may be just a tiny town to some of the students here at Saint Leo University, there is always something to do. Many students complain that “Saint Leo is in the middle of nowhere.” However, the town of Dade City has many unique things to offer that are unbeknownst to students.
