Despite the fact that the Lady Lions have won their fair share of games this season, the game that jump started the Lions, and their fans, was the first game after a long winter’s nap on January 16. The Lady Lions captured their first conference win against Florida Southern College (FSC) giving them an 8-8 record up until a couple of weeks ago when they fell twice to bring their record to 8-10. Fortunately, the Lions do have some up-coming opportunities to win a few more conference games. The team’s hope is that they can rekindle similar numbers from their last meeting with FSC in their effort to battle against some of their other Sunshine State Conference (SSC) rivals. The team currently sits at a 2-6 record in the SSC and 9-11 overall.
“We have great potential when everyone wants to play, but and this is something that has not been consistent,” said sophomore, Melissa Guerero.
With classes just beginning and momentum around campus a little depleting, both men’s and woman’s basketball got the students fired up with a double header against FSC at home. Ladies first, as it should be. The Lions came out strong and took the lead early. The team held strong for the majority of the game. The half came to a close with the teams neck and neck with 29 points apiece. As the half continued there were points of advantage and the Lions executed them with great prestige as their quest for their first conference win was within their reach. The clincher came with just a little over a minute to go. FSC tied it up and brought the crowd to its feet on several occasions as the Lions and Mocs went head to head up until the last 10 seconds. The Lions were within one point twice.
The last 10 seconds gave Whitley Washington, freshman guard, the opportunity that she has been searching for all game.Washington drove the lane all the way to her first points of the game. It was a necessary, hopefully not the last, win for the Lady Lions.
