Theta Phi Alpha hosted the Rock Against Cancer concert on April 6 in the old cafeteria.
Though the rain caused a last minute venue change from Lakeside to the old café in Apartment 4, it did not stop dedicated students looking to rock out for a good cause. Theta Phi Alpha raised more than $360 for the American Cancer Foundation with help from local bands: There for Tomorrow, VersaEmerge and It’s Alive.
“The bands were really excited about the cause and were really happy they could be a part of our concert this year,” said Shelly Peterson, the social chair for Theta Phi Alpha.
The concert began with the opening band It’s Alive, a rock/thrash band from Lake Mary, Florida. Drawing students out of their dorm rooms, the small crowd of only 30 students multiplied in size as soon as the bands began playing. By the time VersaEmerge took the stage, a female-fronted band from Port Saint Lucy, the crowd finally loosened up as they began singing and moshing every now and again.
It was clear to see, however, who all the Theta Phi Alpha girls were looking forward to seeing: There for Tomorrow. This all-male alternative rock band from Orlando, Florida had Saint Leo students (mostly female) singing and moshing their hearts out. The song that received the most reaction from the crowd, however, was the band’s cover of hip hop star Omarion’s hit single “Icebox.”
After the show, the bands stuck around to sell their merchandise, give autographs, and take pictures with fans. All in all, students found that Saint Leo can rock out, have fun, and make a difference.
“The bands are definitely excited for next year,” stated Peterson. “It was a really fun event to plan, and I always wanted something fun, like a show, to happen at Leo.”
However, Theta Phi Alpha’s charity did not end there. The next weekend the sorority participated in the Relay for Life in San Antonio and earned just under $3,000. It’s no wonder that the Sorority of the Year Award went to Theta Phi Alpha, with all the charity and generosity the members have shown this year.

I think this is article is very well written and shows Theta Phi Alpha not only as a sorority but as a group of individuals willing to work hard to achieve their goals.
Theta Phi Alpha is truly deserving of the award for Sorority of the Year. They have shown a dedication to finding a cure to cancer and making sure those with cancer get the proper care. Theta Phi Alpha is a group of strong women that are fighting to make sure that children and adults don’t have to go through cancer anymore.
There was a Relay for Life walk at the high school I graduated from. I really didn’t even know about the organization until my friends little brother got cancer on his brain stem at the age of 11. I was there with him at chemo appointments and got him from school when no one else was available. I looked forward to picking him up from school and walking him home. He is an inspiration to everyone around him and he is my favorite person in the world.

I think this is a very well written article, and it is the topic of a very good cause. Cancer is a horrible epidemic, and it is very nice to see college students who want to help out and help fight the fight against cancer, which many people have to struggle with everyday.
