For those of you who are avid ESPN watchers you have obviously notices that it isn’t just about the Bucs or the Rays, basketball season is in full swing now, and the Heat is on in Miami. It is the same thing for our Saint Leo University Lions, they have hit the court a few times already and both teams are off to a good start.

The lady Lions had a little jump on the men hosting the Sleep Inn Classic with a home court advantage. The Lions swept the tournament winning both of their games by a hefty margin. They won the first game by more than 20 points and then rattled the stands by hitting the 100 point margin and beating Ave Marie University by more than 45 points. The Lions are out to shock the fans this season as their third game against the University of Puerto Rico-Cayey ended in a victory for the Lions and their third straight win for the season.

One of the Lions has already been honored for being the Sunshine State Conference player of the week. Junior, Dominique Daniels was named so after her performance in the first two games at home. Another valuable player through the tournament was sophomore, Lauren Lee who scored the 100th point against Ave Marie, a number statistics show that the Lions have not seen in three years.

As always the men do follow the women and this year they have some new faces to share the court with. Veteran juniors Jordan Prais and Quentin Cullop are joined by junior, Josue Vazquez, and sophomore, Jamal Thompson. The men had their first official game against the University of Puerto Rico-Cayey and sealed the sweep for both teams. The Lions won 89-72, even though it took a little bit to get out those first game jitters, the men stepped it up and seemed well prepared.

Neither team has had conference play yet, but all they can do is take it one game at a time. Both teams will have games over the break, the women will take on their first conference competition on Dec. 6 against Barry. Them men won’t hit the conference until the end of Dec. also against Barry.

Basketball games are so much fun to go to. The players work really hard, so I’m glad its paying off. I hope the streak of good luck continues.

I’m so happy that basketball season has started. Even though I enjoy watching football, I love watching basketball games. I hope this year Miami do well. As for the Lion players I wish them the best. GO LIONS…
