Saint Leo University was just recently one of 635 colleges and universities to be named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. This honor roll is the highest honor for community service amongst higher learning institutions.

Saint Leo University has been honored with this distinction every year since the honor roll’s beginning in 2006.

Those chosen for the Honor Roll went through certain criteria. Saint Leo University’s website writes that the criteria are the following: “Honorees for the award were chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.”

When told about this honor, as listed on Saintleo.edu, Saint Leo University President Arthur F. Kirk Jr. said, “Saint Leo is guided by six core values, including service to every community where we teach, along with excellence, respect, personal development, integrity, and responsible stewardship. The types of service-learning activities and volunteer projects that are affirmed by the Community Service Honor are an important part of everyday life at Saint Leo, and we have been included on the list of honorees every year since the Honor Roll’s inception.”

Junior Amanda Walsh was impressed by this award.

“I think people generally underestimate private universities because of their size,” she said. “However, a small community like Saint Leo can encourage students to get more involved because it’s fun and everyone knows one another. I think we should be proud of this achievement as a school and as a community.”

While being named to the honor roll is a prize in itself, those listed on it receive the following, from the Honor Roll’s website, listed to the right.
