October 28 2009 capped the start of the World Series of baseball. This year it was between the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies. The New York Yankees ended the regular season with a record of 103 wins and 59 losses. They swept the Minnesota Twins in the division series and beat the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 4 games out of 6 to advance to the World Series. The Philadelphia Phillies ended the regular season with a record of 93 wins and 69 losses. They went on to face the Colorado Rockies in the division series and won 3 games out of 4 and went on to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National Championship Series. After 5 games the Phillies come out on top taking 4 games out of 5 from the Dodgers to face the New York Yankees in the World Series.
The pitchers for Game 1 of the World Series were C.C. Sabathia for the Yankees and Cliff Lee for the Phillies. The Phillies take an early lead as Chase Utley hits a home run off of Sabathia in the 3rd and adding another run to the board in the 6th. The Yankees on the other hand can’t seem to figure out Cliff Lee as he goes on to pitch a complete game giving up only 6 hits and an unearned run to win Game 1.
The pitchers for Game 2 of the World Series were A.J. Burnett for the Yankees and Pedro Martinez for the Phillies. The Phillies take an early lead in the 2nd with an RBI hit by Stairs but could seem to get anything going the rest of the game. The Yankees tie it in the 4rd and take the lead in the 6th to give them the lead that they wouldn’t relinquish. Burnett strikes out 9 as the Yankees give Mariano Rivera the ball in the 8th and closed the door on the Phillies as the Yankees win Game 2.
Pitching in Game 3 was Andy Pettitte for the Yankees and Cole Hamels for the Phillies. The Phillies take an early lead and put 3 runs on the score board in the 2nd. The Yankees in the top of the 4th get a couple of run to make it 3 to 2. The Yankees get 3 more in the top of the 5th to make it 5 to 3. Over the next 4 innings the Yankees put together 3 more run to secure the win 8 to 5 in Game 3.
Pitching in Game 4 was C.C. Sabathia on short rest for the Yankees and Joe Blanton for the Phillies. The Yankees got a good head start getting 2 runs in the 1st to get an every lead but saw it get cut in half in the bottom of the 1st. The Phillies would go on to tie it in the bottom of the 4th. The Yankees take the lead back by scoring 2 more in the top of the 5th. Over the next four innings the Phillies get 2 runs making it tied going into the top of the 9th. The Yankees coming up with the top of the order score 3 runs to make it 7 to 4. Mariano Rivera comes in and saves the game as the Yankees win Game 4 of the World Series only needing one more game to win it all.
The pitchers for Game 5 were A.J. Burnett for the Yankees and Cliff Lee for the Phillies, two pitchers that pitched magnificently their first games. The Yankees get an early lead but see it fall in the bottom of the first. 3 to 1 going into the bottom of the 3rd the Phillies put together 3 runs to make it 6 to 1. The Yankees score 4 and the Phillies 3 going into the 9th inning 8 to 5. The Yankees get a rally started score one run but couldn’t keep it going falling short 8 to 6.
Pitching Game 6 for the Yankees is Andy Pettitte and for the Phillies Pedro Martinez. Yankees grab the lead in the bottom of the 2nd with a two run home run hit my Hideki Matsui. The Phillies put up a run in the top of the 3rd but that was no match for Matsui. In the bottom of the 3rd he hit two more runs in to make it 4 to 1. He still wasn’t done. In the bottom of the 5th he hit a two run double to make it his 6th RBI of the night. The Phillies score two in the top of the 6th but that wasn’t enough to catch the Yankees. Mariano Rivera came in and shut the door on the Phillies as the Yankees went on to win Game 6 and their 27th World Series title.
