Edgard: Many people over the break enjoyed their long vacation off of school and some were ready to get the school year started off early. My brother, Edward, and I went to school on Sunday to get a head start on unpacking our things when we were informed that our rooms were locked until Monday.

I agree with them doing this. New students should be able to get a feel for their new school, get a chance to meet people in the same situation, and make new friends before many of the returning students come back. If I was in that position, I would like a day to at least get myself settled in, and meet people who are going through the same things I am. All returning students got Monday to move in, it wasn’t like we weren’t given a day to move it, it just was inconvenient to have to wait an extra day. We were all given the opportunity to pay a certain amount of money to get into our rooms and if you were willing to pay, then you got in, as simple as that. The new students of saint Leo University should have some time to adjust to their new school and their new environment before getting thrown into the unique mix of Saint Leo University students. As part of the freshman class it made it easier getting to know more people at orientation day and hanging out with people who were going through the same things I was. I made a very good friend that day and I am now his roommate. So you never know who you’re going to meet or what experience you might have that could influence you the rest of your life.

Edward: I, on the other hand, completely disagree. I feel that the weekend should’ve been given to the all students attending Saint Leo University. Students who came out of state probably booked a flight for that Saturday, only to arrive with all their bags, and there room key not working. When we left Sunday, both my brother and I knew that we were locked out, but we had relatives who lived in Tampa, so we didn’t see this as a big deal. We just stayed there, but what about out of state students who came back. They had to pay a fee, after they paid a good amount of money for the flight back to school. Yes, the RA in our hall mentioned they would be locked over Christmas break, but many of us thought that the weekend of moving back in would be excluded. The day we drove back to Saint Leo, we decided to stop by our room to check if they were really locked. And sure enough they were. We weren’t the only ones there. A couple doors down was someone else trying to move back in. He was fiddling with the key. The girl with looked confused. Neither of them knew about the doors being locked until we both filled them in. So, all in all, locking the doors was a good idea. But if they’re going to do that, they should make sure all the rules and dates are set straight and understood.
