The January 13 meeting of the Saint Leo Student Government Union (SGU) voted on a new constitution that would effectively overturn all the old flaws of the older constitution and bring in an era of change for the entire campus.
The motion to bring a new Student Government constitution was brought up by the president of the class of 2012, Collin Good. The board voted to make the following changes as Good describes them:
On January 13, a committee was formed, the SGU Constitutional Review Committee, under which a chair would be appointed, and said chair would appoint members of the student body. The membership must contain a minimum of these voting members: two class officers, one male, one female; two Greeks, one male, one female; one liaison (residence life, Greek, athletic); one commuter, one athlete, and one undergraduate, non-traditional student.
While the Constitutional Review Committee will not officially present all changes to the eBoard until February 19, they are still wholly significant in the present tense.
Student Government President Jessica O’Keefe is hopeful about the changes, stating they were necessary for “the growth and development of Saint Leo,” and that the current constitution is “antiquated and necessitated revising of the best interest of the student body.” When asked if she anticipated a large amount of change from this document, O’Keefe simply said “Yes.”
Other Saint Leo students anticipate a change as well.
Freshman class president Cory Los Schumacher said he is “carefully looking this over, as it will have the most amount of effect on my class. We will have to deal with this constitution for three additional years…this means a lot to me and my class, and we have to make sure it all is fair before I’m willing to sign in approval for it.”
Sophomore Deanna Tabone says that she is “excited to see what SGU proposes” and that she feels “it’s going to have a huge effect on the way things are run on this campus.”
The changes to be made to the Constitution show that Saint Leo is moving forward, and adapting to changing times.
