Softball Splits Series in Pensacola

The Saint Leo women’s softball team stepped out onto the field at the University of West Florida. The Lions entered the tournament at 2-2 at the game series on February 13-14th. Having two regional opponents, the first game was against University of West Florida while the second team was Palm Beach Atlantic.

The Lions lost against the undefeated University of West Florida (4-0), yet earned a victory against Palm Beach Atlantic (2-3).

The Lions started off the game against UWF trailing 2-0, but retaliated back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, thanks to a homerun by Brittany Yates. However, the homerun was not enough of a spark as the Lions’ gave up six more runs despite their effort. West Florida had an outstanding nine strikeouts to defeat the Lions by a score of 8-2.

Saint Leo Lions’ started off their second game with a bang as they scored two runs in the bottom half of the first inning. The runs would come from Elysha Agen and Tiffinee Harvey. Agen got on base with a single, stealing second soon after. Harvey got on base with a walk. Brittany Yates belted a ball in the direction of the third baseman, who misplayed it into the outfield, allowing Agen to score and Harvey to advance to third. Harvey would eventually score on a hit by Sarah Boyd. PBA answered with an RBI single in the second inning. The game would remain 2-1 until the seventh inning when Palm Beach Atlantic would come back with another RBI single. As the score was tied going into the bottom of the seventh, the Lions refused to enter extra innings. Jessica Figueredo hit a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice. Harvey stepped up to the plate with Figueredo in scoring position, smashing a walk off single to the right side to win the game.

The Lions will be competing in the Eckerd College Invitational on Friday, February 19th. They will face Drury before facing University of West Florida at 7:30 pm.
